The study of US-China relations is of particular importance at present, as these relations represent a transitional phase whose interactions will ultimately shape the contours of the 21st-century global order. This is due to the relative weight of both the United States and China. The United States remains the sole superpower among a group of major powers, while China, with its steadily growing demographic, economic, and military weight, aspires to become a superpower and play a prominent and influential role in international affairs. Therefore, US-China relations are among the deepest bilateral relationships within the global system. This depth stems from the expansion of relations between the two countries to encompass domestic, regional, and international issues. Key among these are rebalancing the global economy, removing barriers to trade and investment, reaching international agreements on the environment, energy security, and climate change, addressing the Iranian and North Korean nuclear crises and Middle Eastern issues, contributing to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and other economic, security, and bilateral matters. US-China relations are a mix of conflict and cooperation. While there is clear cooperation between the two countries in several areas and rising indicators of partnership, China still believes that the United States is working to contain China by adopting a set of strategies in the Asia-Pacific region, most notably strengthening alliances, especially with Japan and South Korea, attempts to thwart North Korea's nuclear ambitions, the US arms deal with Taiwan, and intervention in maritime disputes in the South and East China Seas. In contrast, the United States considers China's economic and military rise a threat to its vital goals and interests in the region. Therefore, US-China relations are viewed as complex and complicated, characterized by mutual distrust between the two countries.
