Pawan Bhatia's The Inward Eye is a horror manuscript framed as the testimony of Brother Aldous Vane, blind seer of the Order of the Unclosed Wound. Aldous recounts his childhood: his mother dies after a forceps birth, leaving a crescent scar; his twin sister Maren drowns in Penhallow Quarry in 1983. As an adult hospice porter, he meets Sister Oriel Fenwick, who recruits him to the Order. The Order blinds its members not to see more but to control what they see: the physical eye is a filter, and self-blinding opens the Third Eyelid of the Soul. Through rites—the Opening of the first scar, Seven Nights in dark cells, Bone Broadcast of skulls, the Circle of Twelve and Empty Throne—Aldous gains shadow sight and reads the world as a manuscript. On the Empty Throne he hears Maren's name and "e;Not yet."e;He climbs six thresholds; the Seventh is unknown, last reached by Ambrose Thale in 1847. Tobias Quill's heresy—keeping one eye for children—foreshadows disaster. In 2031 the Great Blinding spreads: humanity's eyes reject the world. Blind pilgrims migrate east to Kashi, where the dead feed on memories; to a city of the unborn; and to Hiroshima, the City of the Wound. Oriel descends into a drowned village, reunites with her dead brother Jory, sees a golden filament linking Aldous to something ancient, and stays with the dead. Aldous returns to find the Hall of Facing's mirrors turned. The forty-first Mirror That Looks Back reveals an unseen audience: beings of darkness, older than light, who have watched every secret and want to be named and read. They offer the last minute of Maren's life if Aldous will read them. He refuses, then attempts the Three Eyes—Open, Closed, Loving—and glimpses the Seventh Door. He realizes the manuscript itself is an instrument: to warn is to recruit, teaching the dark to see through every reader. He chooses to dictate it anyway. The final warning declares the manuscript not a text but an instrument; the reader's scar is opening, shadow speaking, bones receiving. Transcriber Ysolde Marrow notes that after the lamp dies, she can still see the page.
