Aeolus

He lived on a floating island surrounded by a wall of bronze, with six sons married to six daughters, and every wind in the world under his governance. Zeus had appointed him keeper of the winds - to release them or restrain them, to manage the most powerful of the natural forces that the ancient world's sailors and farmers and travelers most directly depended on.
Then Odysseus arrived.
Aeolus is the interior account of the keeper of the winds - not simply the episode that the Odyssey preserved, but the full and genuine story of what it meant to govern the winds across an entire existence organized around that governance. The specific and daily work of managing something the entire world needed. The particular knowledge of each wind's individual character developed across a very long tenure. The genuine hospitality extended to the famous traveler. The genuine gift of the organized winds in the oxhide bag. The return of Odysseus after the bag was opened within sight of Ithaca. The honest refusal to help a second time.
The tradition remembered Aeolus for the bag. Aeolus is the story of everything the bag was part of.
