In this collection of 77 vivid poems and short poetic essays, accompanied by 30 remarkable full-color photos and images, SC Weiss explores themes of living in, making sense of, marveling at, laughing with, and grieving over, a world (and an age) in transition and conflict. The works are organized in five sections: 1. Dreams & Hallucinations; 2.) Social Studies & History; 3.) Idle Thoughts & Spying; 4.) Chants & Prayers; 5.) Zen Jam. A concluding piece, "Index of...", recapitulates the entire book through a multipage catalog of topics covered and implicit associations.
These poems are an invitation to laugh, ponder, think twice, go searching for songs and people referenced in the pieces, and generally wallow in the strange, sometimes harsh beauty that is life and its quest for hope and reason.
From the author: "Imagine your ancestors dropping in on your world, here and now. Wrap your head around what they might make of that. A philosopher wrote, 'If human understanding can master it, then it is not yet sufficiently weird to do justice to reality.' Whatever the absurdity is of what we're trying to put our finger on with (poetry), the weirdness reflected by the poetry is only a flailing stab in the dark at tearing open the curtain and stepping into what is truly real. Put another way, sometimes your mind makes its sense of the world in a way that you know you'd better write down: You're establishing a connection point between who you are and your world; a coincidence of opposites, as they say. That point is neither one nor the other, but acts as an opening, enabling a crossing of the boundary to someplace new."
That's why this book.
