Assurance

Fire protection used to be a public service. Now safety is a subscription.

In the city of Cineris, rescue arrives by tier: Bronze, Silver, Platinum. The towers are spotless. The Char burns on schedule.

Kara Holt, once a city firefighter, now runs a volunteer crew into the neighbourhoods no plan covers, and she is losing ground by the night. Mira Espina is an analyst in the tower her father runs, and she has found the reason in the models: the fires below are not accidents. They are line items. The largest one has a date, and the district attached to it is still full of people.

There is no arsonist to stop. There is a meeting, a model, and a name signed under every order by a man who never reads what he signs, and the machine behind them is already moving: drones repositioning, crews reassigned, the date drawing closer. Digital proof can be argued with, and every record that could settle it belongs to the company that owns the hydrants, the cameras, and the story.

A propulsive near-future thriller about privatized safety, automated decisions, and the people who refuse to be someone else's acceptable loss, Assurance asks the question no dashboard can answer: when the system itself signs off on the fire, who answers for the signature?

The fire is already approved. No action is required.
