You were never waiting for a god.

For as long as there have been people, they have looked up and waited for rain, for healing, for rescue. And every answer that ever came arrived through human hands.

Autotheism is the belief that the power to change your life lives within you, not above you. It is written in the form of a scripture, with testaments, books, chapters and verses, but every story in it is true. It does not ask you to believe in anything you cannot see. It asks you to look at what human beings have actually done, and to recognise that the same power is in you.

Inside you will find:

The Book of Makers. How people stopped waiting and started making: taming fire, breeding wheat from wild grass, carrying water across deserts, writing down their knowledge, defeating smallpox, harnessing lightning and walking on the moon.

The Book of Peoples. How strangers learned to trust each other, trade, write laws, test the truth, overthrow kings who claimed heaven's blessing, end slavery and apartheid, and choose peace.

The Book of Faith. A respectful account of why people created their religions, what faith built and what it broke, and what autotheism keeps from it: gathering, ritual, reflection, discipline and charity.

The Book of Practice. Seven tenets and the daily practices that bring them to life: the morning intention, the evening ledger, the daily hardship, the shaping of your world and the sacred rest. All of them are grounded in what psychology has learned about how people actually change.

The Lives. Twenty true stories of people who faced the impossible, from Siddhartha and Marcus Aurelius to Frederick Douglass, Helen Keller, Charlotte Maxeke, Viktor Frankl and Nelson Mandela. It includes those who failed and kept going, those proven right too late, and those whose belief in themselves became a weapon against others.

The Sayings. Eighty-two short proverbs to carry through a hard day.

The Book of Self. Blank pages that are yours to write: your intentions, your honest ledger, letters to who you were, who you are and who you are becoming, and in the end the lesson of your own life, to hand down.

Illustrated throughout with 190 original linocut-style drawings, and rooted in the African story where humanity began, from the fires of Wonderwerk Cave and the engraved ochre of Blombos to the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg.

Autotheism is for anyone who has waited for their life to change and is ready to change it themselves. It is for those who left a childhood faith and miss its community and meaning, for those who never had a faith and want a framework for living well, and for those who still hold a faith and value practices that ask them to take responsibility for their own growth.

It is not a promise of easy success. It is not contempt for believers. It is not worship of the self. It has no leader, no price to belong and no secrets. Question everything in it, including this book.

Theism looks up. Atheism looks around and finds nothing there. Autotheism looks in.

You do not join autotheism. You practise it.
