The figure of the Caribbean colonial worker in the mid-19th century was often represented as a dehumanized, financial asset. This depiction was reconfigured dramatically during the period with the abolition of slavery, the introduction and dismantling of indentureship, and struggles for social and political autonomy throughout the Caribbean. In recent years, the re-imagining of historical material and events has become important for contemporary visual artists engaging with postcolonial Caribbean discourse. 'Creole in the Archive' looks at photographs, postcards, photojournalism and social documentation of the colonial worker between 1850 and 1950. It juxtaposes this archive against the work of contemporary art by post-independent, postcolonial Caribbean artists. Drawing on Derridean ideas of the archive it reconceptualizes the archive as contiguous. It argues that through the conjuncture of contemporaneous and past material, artworks and associated locations we can develop clearer insights into the lived experience of the Caribbean figure.
