Grandfathers and Grandmothers is Natalia Efroimson's final book, published posthumously. At first glance, it is simply a family chronicle. Yet through the author's stories of her family-her grandparents, parents, relatives, and her childhood in the town of Khimki outside Moscow-the history of an entire country emerges: the Revolution, the Civil War and the Cheka, arrests and fear ingrained in people's very being, war, the Siege of Leningrad, postwar life, the falsehood that permeated Soviet existence, and emigration. This is a book about what the older generations kept silent about, and about the memories that must be preserved before it is too late.
