The landscape of development is changing with the growing recognition that the 'marketplace' cannot guarantee benefits for the poor. This has led to a reawakening of interest in the capacity of governments to plan and facilitate poverty reduction. Reflecting calls for a more holistic and multidisciplinary exploration of development planning for poverty reduction, this collection brings together economic and anthropological views to facilitate a dialogue between two perspectives that are often seen as competing. The contributors interrogate the definition of poverty and the relationship between the donors and recipients of development assistance.
