Where the Real Learning Happens
By the time a spec sheet like the one in Chapter 1 lands on your desk, you're not brand new anymore. You've mixed some samples, run some grinds, maybe scorched a batch of something bright orange onto the inside of a mixing vessel you then spent an afternoon apologizing to your plant manager for. You've got real time in the lab, and it's worth being honest about how that time actually breaks down, because most careers in this industry split roughly the same way no matter where you started.
Something like 10% of it has been formal training - this book series, a supplier's technical seminar, a community college course, whatever structured instruction you've had access to. If you've been lucky, another 20% has come from a mentor: somebody further along than you who's been dropping small, hard-won pieces of practical knowledge in your direction, more than a few of which you've probably ignored up to now, because you didn't yet have the scar tissue to recognize why they mattered.
The other 70% is everything else. It's the batch that came out wrong for a reason nobody wrote down anywhere. It's the customer complaint that sent you back to a formula you thought was finished. It's standing at a mix tank at four in the afternoon trying to figure out why today's batch doesn't match last Tuesday's, with nothing to work from but the raw materials in front of you and whatever judgment you've built up so far. Nobody schedules that 70%. It just happens, batch after batch, while you're doing the job.
