Guardians of the High Frontier

The high frontier just stopped being neutral.

When Dr. Naomi Caldwell and her team crack open the south-polar regolith returned by Artemis 7, they expect the usual solar-wind signatures. What they find instead are sub-micron machining marks and Helium-3 concentrations that defy natural explanation. Something has been conducting sustained industrial operations on the Moon for years. Possibly decades. And it is not human.

Naomi is drawn into the Emergency Earth Resource Security program as its leading scientific expert. Her job is to translate the impossible lunar data into engineering truth for the men and women building the first true starship. Vanguard. A pulsed direct-fusion vessel powered by the very Helium-3 the lunar machines seem to prize. It must reach cislunar space in hours rather than days. It must carry weapons. It must carry hope. And it must be ready before whatever is already out there decides humans are in the way.

The price is immediate. Rare-earth magnets are stripped from terrestrial fusion demonstrators and green-energy grids. Containment tests melt nozzles and scatter debris across test pads. Allied diplomats argue over quotas while generals demand railguns before the shielding is even bolted down. What does this cost a planet already bleeding resources? What systems will fail first under an eighteen-month timeline? And who among the scientists, soldiers, and coalition partners will disagree loudly enough to slow the program?

From the raw chaos of the orbital shipyard to the final ignition burn, Naomi stands as the scientific conscience of a crew forged under pressure. Hyper-precise Priya Sharma double-checks every alignment. Irritable pragmatist Marcus Lee cuts through the optimism with dark humor. Quietly anxious Kyle Nguyen buries himself in contingency logs. Systems absolutist Elena Ramirez masks fear with blunt black humor. Blue-collar engineer Raj Patel keeps the forge alive with machine-shop metaphors and restless hands.

They are the Guardians of the High Frontier. Their first voyage will decide whether humanity claims its place among the stars or simply defends it long enough to survive.
