You understand more Hindi than you can say. This book closes that gap.
If you can follow a conversation but freeze the moment it is your turn, the problem is not vocabulary. It is assembly - which ending goes on the verb, where the little words sit, why one sentence used ne and the next one did not. Hindi Made Practical is a pre-intermediate course built entirely around that problem.
Every word of Hindi in this book is written in the Roman alphabet, in one consistent spelling scheme explained in the first chapter and held to the last page. There is no Devanagari. That is a deliberate choice: it lets you put all of your attention on structure rather than on decoding a script. The book says so openly and tells you where to learn the script when you want it.
Every example sentence comes with a word-by-word gloss showing the Hindi order and the job each word is doing, then a natural English translation. The gloss is where the learning happens.
What's inside
- A short pronunciation chapter and one clear romanisation scheme, used consistently throughout
- The sentence frame, gender and number agreement, and the oblique case
- Being and having - the three different ways Hindi says "I have"
- The postpositions, and what they do to the words in front of them
- The present habitual and continuous, and why the difference matters
- The past tenses and the ne construction, explained slowly and completely
- The future, the subjunctive, and how intentions are expressed
- tu, tum and aap - what choosing between them signals, and how to soften a request
- Compound verbs, the single biggest difference between textbook Hindi and natural Hindi
- Joining clauses: ki, agar, jab tak, the jo-vo pairs, and the -kar participle
- Questions, numbers, time, money and dates
- Four situation chapters: arranging and changing a booking, shopping and prices, complaining politely, and small talk that survives its first pause
- Common learner errors, with the correction, in every chapter
- Exercises with answers at the end of each chapter, plus a full review appendix, a glossary with genders marked, and a hundred sentences worth memorizing
