History of Al-Andalus

History of Al-Andalus: From Conquest to Legacy Between Legend and Truth

For eight centuries, Al-Andalus stood as one of the most remarkable civilizations in medieval history - a unique meeting point between East and West. This book offers a balanced and critical exploration of its rise, its golden age, and its eventual fall.

Beginning with the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711, the narrative traces the establishment of Umayyad rule, the flourishing of Cordoba as a center of science and culture, the turbulent era of the Taifa kingdoms, and the final centuries of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. It examines not only the external pressures that led to its decline but also the internal divisions and political weaknesses that ultimately contributed to its downfall in 1492.

Rather than presenting Al-Andalus as a lost paradise or a simple story of conquest and defeat, this work seeks to understand the complex human, political, and social factors that shaped its history. It also follows the fate of the Moriscos after the fall of Granada and reflects on the enduring legacy of Andalusian civilization in language, architecture, science, and culture.

A thoughtful reading for anyone interested in medieval history, Islamic civilization in Europe, and the long-term consequences of cultural interaction and conflict.
