North Luzon is home to some of the most forbidding terrain in the Philippines. Following the Japanese invasion of the islands, it was also the staging area for several Filipino-American guerrilla bands who sought to Rather intelligence and harass the occupying forces. More often they merely fought to survive.Bernard Norling focuses on the Cagayan-Apayao Forces, commanded by Maj. Ralph Praeger. Their bravery is unquestionable, but by September 1943 they were finished -- victims of death in combat, capture by the enemy, or disease.Based to a large degree on unpublished sources, including the diary of Praeger's executive officer -- the only American from this unit to survive the war -- The Intrepid Guerrillas of North Luzon recounts a harrowing tale of valor, determination, and occasional hardbought successes.
