LET IT BREATHE

Let It Breathe argues that the scarce human capacity in an age of instant machine answers is not the ability to answer but the willingness to leave an answer standing open. Taking its title and its central idea from the phrase John Keats coined in a letter to his brothers in December 1817, the book traces how Western thought came to treat inquiry as something that terminates, examines what the research on premature closure, automation bias, and desirable difficulties tells us about the cost of concluding too soon, and asks what happens to human judgment when the interval between a question and its answer collapses to nothing. It is written for teachers, clinicians, managers, researchers, and general readers who use these systems daily and have felt something they could not name, and it offers both a defensible account of when a question should be held open and a set of practices for holding it. Readers will come away with a working distinction between deciding and concluding, a criterion for exercising what the book calls the veto, and an argument for why the one category of thing that must never be concluded is a person.
