Combining cross-cultural historical research with methods from futures studies, the authors offer a unique and clarifying understanding of what technology especially communication technology is and what the interactive roles of human agency and communication technologies are in influencing social and environmental stability and change, especially in regard to power relations in societies in the past, present, and futures.
