Here, we are not seeking the eminent Victorian in Newman; rather 'a possible contemporary'; not the subtle philosopher, but a complete Christian who put his whole life on the path of Christ and followed that path with edifying fidelity. Already deeply involved in his theological works, Bouyer nevertheless took time to write this biography, studying important unpublished documents at the Oratory of Birmingham. In 1952, a book was published which faced the delicate question of Newman's sensitivity – the key to the great theologian's world. For Bouyer, one of the principal elements of Newman's spiritual universe is a true mystique of Christ: 'the irreplaceable mirror without which the divine light is invisible to fallen man, who then sees only darkness.'
