The history of Patagonia written by Jaime Said is the first consolidated account of
explorations, endurance, and survival of man in the southern hemisphere, considering
the flora and fauna of the region. It covers geographical limits, and detailed history of
Patagonia since its discovery in 1520 up until the 19th century, when the territory become
part of two Republics; Argentina and Chile.
This book covers three centuries, since the Renaissance, with the discovery of the straight
of Magellan and the opening of the Western route to the Indies, weakening Venice and
Portugal monopoly over the spice islands, until its independence from the Spanish colony.
Privateers such as Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish sailed the southern seas
of Patagonia on their encounter with Spanish fleet, where they raided ships loaded with
gold and other valuable goods in the Cape Horn passage.
Later, the discovery of the Beagle Channel by Robert Fitzroy, which permitted Charles
Darwin to collect species in Patagonia, deriving into serious investigations and conclusions
of his famous theory of evolution and the origin of man.
The geography in this book is treated with several maps, under the official boundaries.
