Piet Heyn, an admiral of the Dutch Republic, is indeed famous for his exploits as a privateer on behalf of the Dutch West India Company. A man of the sea for his entire life, Heyn is credited with the sensational conquest of the Spanish Plate Fleet at Matanzas Bay in Cuba, a task he completed by coordinating a large fleet of his own compatriots in 1628. Here's his story, compiled from research in numerous archives by a devoted historian, Gaëtan Algoet.
This book provides the reader with an outline of Heyn's expeditions, and contains an English translation of the celebratory pamphlet "TRIUMPHE", written by Dionysius Spranckhuysen in 1629, which presents the details of the Matanzas victory. There's also entries of explanation regarding the notorious "Dunkirk Privateers" and the organization of the Dutch West India Company, known simply as the "WIC". The editor, T. L. Armstrong, provides a preface that explores some of the myth surrounding Piet Heyn and the mysterious "Lucayan Beach Wreck" in The Bahamas.
