The nations capital is well-known as the home of The White House, but there is a rich cultural history that exists in the other Washington. This is the first book of its kind to present a complete overview of the 1980s subcultures of Washington, D.C., and is released in conjunction with an upcoming exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, curated by Roger Gastman. This volume is packed full of essays and interviews that bring you inside the real D.C. of the 1980s: a world where the Do-it-Yourself Go-Go, punk rock and harDCore music scenes thrive, Go-Go crews and graffiti writers are prolific, alternative art scenes flourish, crack floods the streets, homicides skyrocket, DayGlo Globe posters adorn the lamp posts and D.C.s diversity shines. Included are almost 1,000 photographs and interviews with Rev. alter Fauntroy, Marion Barry, Ian MacKaye, Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk, Rare Essences Whiteboy, Junk Yard Band, E.U.s Sugarbear, Globe Posters, Urban Verbs Robin Rose, Cynthia Connolly, Jeff Nelson, notorious Go-Go crew heavies GANGSTER GEORGE, LISA OF THE WORLD and WHATS UP WOODY, plus Club 9:30 owner Seth Hurwitz, and D.C.s graffiti legend COOL DISCO DAN. The book expertly chronicles a shifting decade in which D.C. was largely ignored by its President, but embraced by its own citizens.
