We call Earth the "cradle of humanity." But why is this cradle so hostile to us? Why does Earth's gravity destroy our spines, why does the sun burn our skin, and why are our infants the most vulnerable in all of nature? No other species is as poorly adapted to this world as we are.

• Why does our brain possess "excess power" unnecessary for wilderness survival, but essential for interstellar navigation?
• Where did our instincts go, and why are we the only species that must learn how to survive from scratch?
• Is our technological progress a "discovery"-or are we simply struggling to remember what we once knew?

We didn't evolve from the dust of this earth. We are the survivors of a forgotten catastrophe. We are a high-tech civilization trapped in the bodies of primates, stranded on a foreign world. Our obsession with the stars isn't curiosity. It's homesickness.
