When twelve-year-old Emma Mercer accompanies her father to Pinson Mounds in West Tennessee, she expects a boring Saturday spent waiting for him to finish a work assignment. Instead, she notices an unremarkable stone artifact tucked among the museum displays-nine shallow lines cut across its surface and a small circular depression near one edge.
