Nearly two years after America went dark, Woodford County has survived long enough to face a new kind of crisis. Its fields may produce food, but its people still need medicine, machine parts, milling, and skilled labor. Daniel Mercer leads a fragile delegation east along a road divided by checkpoints, rival authorities, and desperate settlements.

Behind Lexington's guarded barriers, a few districts glow with restored power while thousands live in darkness. Director Miriam Keene offers Woodford access to clinics and workshops in exchange for grain, labor registries, and recognition of her city's control over the corridor. Frankfort claims neither side has the authority to make such a bargain. Daniel's daughter Emma sees a system built to make inequality permanent. Daniel sees resources that could keep his family and county alive.
