The Masonic Book Club, Vol. 30

Thomas Milton Stewart was a prominent American Freemason-notably a Past Master and 33º Mason-who dedicated much of his work to exploring the philosophical and esoteric foundations of the craft. First published in the early 1910s, with original copyrights dating back to 1914, his book Symbolic Teachings of Masonry and Its Message was written to help both Masons and non-Masons understand the deeper layers of Masonic ritual. Because of its deep dive into the historical and spiritual lineage of fraternal traditions, the text is still considered culturally significant by scholars of esoteric history and remains widely preserved today in public domain reprints.

The book serves as a detailed exposition on the ethics, religion, and philosophy of Freemasonry, operating on the premise that symbolism is a universal language designed to convey profound spiritual truths. Stewart argues that Masonic emblems-much like musical notation or Arabic numerals-carry exact, transcendent ideas that bind various global traditions to a singular, ancient "Secret Doctrine." Rather than viewing Masonry through a strictly dogmatic or theological lens, the text encourages readers to look at the ancient mysteries, moral conduct, and universal doctrines that underscore the institution's rituals.
