The Monster Alliance

In 1815, the great powers of Europe drew a line on a map and called it a nation. Fifteen years later, that nation tore itself apart. This is the story of the Belgian Revolution of 1830 - how a kingdom built by treaty, not by consent, collapsed under the weight of a Calvinist king's contempt for his Catholic, French-speaking south, and how an improbable alliance of liberals and priests turned petitions, pamphlets, and finally barricades into a nation. It begins with an opera that ignited a mob, follows volunteers who bled beneath the Grand Place, and tracks a Provisional Government inventing statehood from nothing while Europe's monarchs debated whether to crush it. A Russian army bound for Brussels turns east instead, diverted by a Polish uprising no one saw coming. A French marshal marches to save a throne no Frenchman will occupy. And through it all, a new kingdom papers over the very grievances - language, class, empire - that will haunt it for a century.
