The Queen Who Married the Shadow

Queen Eveline arrives at Ravenscroft expecting a political marriage, only to discover that she has been brought into a kingdom already ruled by something far older and more terrifying than a living king. Its servants behave like hollow imitations of human beings, while Valerian slowly anchors his consciousness to Eveline's body. The blind Dowager Queen Lillian warns her that the marriage is an ancient blood contract designed to turn each queen into a bridge between the Shadow King and the living world.As Eveline investigates, she discovers that previous queens were sacrificed in the same way. The shadow attached to her is no longer truly hers; it is Valerian stitching himself into her bones and preparing to abandon her body once she has been completely consumed.Eveline refuses to become another passive sacrifice. Instead, she searches for a way to sever the ancient contract and discovers that the Shadow King's physical manifestation can be destroyed only through the palace's sacred fire. She realizes that saving herself will require destroying the very palace that has imprisoned her-and possibly sacrificing her own remaining life in the process.At the climax, Eveline reaches the ritual chamber and deliberately strikes the brazier, unleashing a violent violet fire. The connection between her and Valerian snaps, and the Shadow King's consciousness is torn apart. The collapsing palace buries the possessed servants and destroys the ancient kingdom of darkness.Eveline dies as the palace collapses, but she dies by her own choice, rather than as Valerian's sacrifice. Her final memories are of her father, her mother, and the green fields of her lost homeland. With the Shadow King gone, Ravenscroft's artificial twilight disappears and the night sky finally becomes visible again.
