When Flight 847's instruments fail over the mid-Pacific, Captain Dana Oyelaran puts the crippled airliner down in open ocean, and nineteen survivors wash ashore on an island that satellites have photographed ten thousand times and never once seen.

Ray Kelderman has spent forty years making machines tell the truth. Armed with a notebook, a bowl of water, and a sliver of steel, he starts measuring, and the measurements say something impossible: the sky above the island is a lie.
