The Unboring Story

The ground is trembling but not due to an earthquake; instead, it is because of footsteps. Footsteps of eight thousand warriors walking in unison with their shields held up high, spears in front of them making the perfect line of armor made of metal and muscle stretching further than a football field. You can faint just from hearing the sounds they're making. They're even raising dust clouds three miles away.

Greek warfare wasn't random charging and individual sword fights like in the movies. It was organized, disciplined, and built around one devastating idea. These men that made up the hoplites were referred to as hoplites. These individuals were not mercenaries paid by the state. Instead, they were common people like farmers, artisans, and businessmen who had to buy their armor and present themselves when the polis called upon them. A complete suit of hoplites consisted of the helmet made of bronze, breastplate, greaves, aspis, a spear, and a short sword. All this armor was estimated to weigh roughly sixty pounds.
