We inherit rules whose original arguments have disappeared. Technologies turn temporary solutions into infrastructure. Institutions divide responsibility across agencies, contractors, specialists, databases, and jurisdictions until everyone owns a piece of the process and no one owns the outcome.

Meanwhile, citizens are asked to navigate systems they cannot fully see, evaluate information arriving faster than context, consent under conditions shaped by necessity, and trust forms of expertise that may be both indispensable and incomplete.

This is not an argument against institutions, science, expertise, technology, or government. It is an argument for systems capable of remembering why they exist, preserving uncertainty, tracing responsibility, correcting themselves, and remaining answerable to the people whose lives they shape.

Power should not be allowed to integrate faster than accountability.

Because democracy does not require a world without complexity. It requires complexity that can still be inspected, challenged, remembered, and changed.

We are the system.

And because we are, it can change.
