What About the 99?

What happens when God's mercy toward someone else begins to feel unfair to you?

Jesus told of a shepherd who left ninety-nine sheep in the wilderness to search for one that was lost. We celebrate the Shepherd who pursues the one-but an uncomfortable question sometimes remains:

What about the ninety-nine?

What about those who stayed faithful while someone else wandered? What about those who continued serving, carried the responsibility, and preserved the household while attention turned toward the one who left? Does the Father see them too?

In Luke 15, Jesus answers the accusations of the Pharisees by telling three stories: a lost sheep, a lost coin, and two lost sons. These stories certainly reveal the value of the lost, but they also reveal something deeper-the posture of the Father toward everyone who belongs to Him.

The father ran to meet the younger son returning from the far country. But he also left the celebration to speak with the elder son standing outside. The father loved both sons, moved toward both sons, and invited both sons into relationship with him.

The question was never whether the faithful son mattered. The deeper question was whether years of nearness to the father had taught him to love what the father loved.

But faithfulness is intended to do more than keep us in the Father's house. It should form the Father's posture within us.

The question is not simply whether we stayed.

The question is whether we will enter the Father's joy.
