Venice doesn't float. It stands on a buried forest: millions of alder logs driven into the mud since the seventh century, intact because the lagoon floor has no oxygen. The wood survives because it has been suffocating for eight hundred years. It's one of those truths the city keeps underwater, where nobody looks.

Neus Gisbert is a geomatics engineer. Her work is to measure how much Venice sinks with a precision counted in tenths of a millimeter per year. When a bronze monitoring plate in the north of Cannaregio gives her eleven times more than it should in four months, she checks it three times. The instrument is fine. The number doesn't lie. And the consortium she works for would prefer she stop looking.

Alvise Zennaro is a fire department diver. He's spent twenty years going down into canals where you can't see anything and learning to read the city with his hands. His father did the same before him, until a report nobody wanted to hear cost him his license, his wife, and eleven years of his life. When Alvise finds at the bottom of a canal the same soft piles his father described, he has to decide if the same thing is going to happen to him.

They cross paths in the flooded androne of a palazzo sinking faster than it should. She measures; he reads by touch. Neither of them trusts the other. And together they begin to see the shape of something that has been hidden in plain sight for more than a decade.

Because someone is destroying the foundations of Venice with a precision that isn't natural. And the machinery doing it is perfectly legal.

What Holds Venice is a thriller and a love story set in the Venice that doesn't appear in the guidebooks: the mud at low tide, the November acqua alta, the industrial canals of Marghera, and the black piles nobody sees. A story about two people who learn to read cities from underneath-and about what happens when they look at each other with the same attention.
