Boethius (circa 476-526), a Roman philosopher, scholar and statesman, wrote "The Consolation of Philosophy" - one of the most influential texts to come out of the late Middle Ages - while in prison, awaiting execution. This edition, based on Richard H. Green's translation, is accompanied by the editor's preface and an introduction to the work. "Contexts" reprints selections from the texts that Boethius drew upon for his work. "Criticism" collects five wide-ranging essays by major scholars of Boethius. A chronology and bibliography are also included.
