La Porta Romana - le cui estreme regioni di mezzodì vennero ribattezzate, rispettivamente, Porta Vigentina e Ludovica - prendeva nome dal varco che interrompeva la cerchia di Mediolanum nei pressi dell'odierna piazza Missori. Ne costituisce oggi l'estrema testimonianza il corso di Porta Romana, che ebbe la sua ultima stagione di splendore nei secoli XVII e XVIII allorché divenne passerella per le sfarzose carrozze dell'aristocrazia cittadina.
