Excerpt from An Address Delivered at the Dedication of the Town Hall: In Worcester, (Mass;) On the Second Day of May, 1825 Fellow-Citizens, I fear I shall neither meet your expectations, nor do justice to myself, as circumstances beyond my control have rendered it impossible for me to devote as much of my time to preparation as is indispensable to a creditable performance of the duty assigned me. The occasion seems to invite a recurrence to past events, and to call for some brief notice of the early history of the Town. It is much to be regretted that there is not a more perfect history of the first settlers, giving us an account of the motives which brought them here, of the sufferings they endured, of their conflicts with the natives, of their habits of life and means of support, and of the places where they began their settlement, - as these interesting facts now rest principally on the doubtful authority of tradition.
