The acclaimed author of Amberley Church: A Critical Appreciation has now, in another book about Amberley, broadened his scope to include the history of the whole village and its development over the centuries: not only its remarkable church and those well-known attractions, the Amberley Working Museum and Amberley Castle Hotel, but also, and perhaps most famous of all, the picturesque tiled and thatched cottages that have proved an inexhaustible subject for art. Strung between the South Downs and the Weald, the 'Pearl of Sussex' is remarkable for the sheer variety of its buildings, which employ the whole range of local materials in their make-up. Equally remarkable is the way they harmonise both with one other and with the surrounding landscape.
