Excerpt from The Art of False Reasoning Exemplified: In Some Extracts From the Report of Sir Robert Peel's Speech in the Times Paper of July 7th, 1849 Although Sir Robert, in the foregoing extract, manifests a very laudable desire that others should not avail themselves of the use of vague declamation; yet the concluding paragraph shews how much more easy it is to profess sound maxims, than to act upon them. There is more than ordinary wisdom in the clause commencing All this was, I won't say, etc. This cautious qualification indicates great forethought. It provides a way by which, when expediency requires it, the speaker may take up the Opposite side of the question. It is as if he had said, I won't say that Tenterden Church-steeple is the cause of the Goodwin Sands; but if you are foolish enough to think so, I won't be the man to undeceive you, at least for the present.
