Am Ende des 16. und Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts, als die Jesuiten gerade die intellektuelle Führungsrolle in der katholischen Kirche von den Dominikanern übernommen hatten, erschienen in Coimbra (Portugal) die Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis e Societate Iesu. Sie gehören zu den bedeutendsten Sammlungen von Kommentaren zu den Schriften des Aristoteles. Es wurden insgesamt acht Werke kommentiert, die eine zentraler Bedeutung im Schaffen des griechischen Philosophen besitzen: Physica, de Coelo, Meteora, Parva Naturalia, Ethica ad Nicomachum, de Generatione et Corruptione, de Anima, Dialectica. Alle Bände wurden anonym publiziert. Die Verfasser sind unter den Professoren und Schülern des Jesuitenkollegs der Universität von Coimbra zu suchen, die sich um den "portugiesischen Aristoteles" Petrus Fonseca (1528-1599) scharten, den Leiter der Ordensprovinz Portugal. Die Kommentare sind in gutem, flüssigem Latein geschrieben und werden durch zuverlässige Texterklärungen und eine erschöpfende Diskussion des Aristotelischen Systems ergänzt. Die Sammlung stellt insgesamt ein Meisterwerk dar, das später kaum übertroffen wurde und lange Zeit richtungsweisend blieb. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, at the very period when the Jesuits had taken over the leading intellectual role in the Catholic Church from the Dominicans, the Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis e Societate Iesu were published in Coimbra (Portugal). They are one of the most important collections of commentaries on the writings of Aristotle. Eight texts are covered, all of which are of central importance in the Greek philosopher's work: Physica, de Coelo, Meteora, Parva Naturalia, Ethica ad Nicomachum, de Generatione et Corruptione, de Anima and Dialectica. All the volumes were published anonymously. The authors are to be found among the professors and students of the Jesuit College at the University of Coimbra who gathered around the "Portuguese Aristotle" Petrus Fonseca (1528-1599), the head of the Portuguese province of the order. The commentaries are written in good, fluent Latin and augmented with reliable explanations of the text and an exhaustive discussion of the Aristotelian system. The whole collection represents a masterpiece which has seldom been bettered and which long remained highly influential.
