Remembering often feels direct - like mental time travel. However, an increasing body of research, led by Bruce Whittlesea and others, suggests that remembering is not so direct but often inferential in nature. Similarly, research on metacognition has shown that inferences are involved with other subjective judgments as well. For example, high confidence in the answer to a question can arise from participants' inferences about the ease of generating details related to that question.
