Excerpt from Der Schimmelreite: Novelle A school and college edition of the Schimmelreiter, which is probably the best of Theodor Storm's stories from an aes thetic and a technical point of view, is herewith offered for the first time. The scene of the story is laid on the west coast of Sobles Wig near Husum, the author's native town. The actors are only Frisian peasants; but, while actors and action are local and homely, they present types and truths that are universal and eternal. The pervading tone is as invigorating as are the breezes from that North Sea mentioned so frequently in the text. The style Of the work is powerful. The language is hardly simple, yet with the aid of the ample vocabulary the book may be profitably used by beginners as well as by more advanced students. The editorial apparatus consists of this vocabulary, notes, and practical exercises. The exercises are Of different kinds, and may be ex tended or varied by the instructor. They are prefaced by a concise statement of sentence-construction with a review table attached, and consist of connected passages in Eng lish based on a portion Of the text, of questions to be repeated by the students and answered in German, and of a series of themes suggested by the text for free German composition.
