Opis

Learn Strategies for the Eradication of Visceral Leishmaniasis: Complete with Updated Knowledge and Real-World Information. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as black fever or kala-azar (Hindu for the darkening of the skin), is a life-threatening disease first reported from the Indian subcontinent. VL ranks as the world's second largest parasitic disease killer and is one of the most neglected tropical diseases. Why neglected? This is deeply related to its prevalence in the lowest income population of poor countries. The disease is life-threatening, but the clinical course is often subacute. Most of the infected are uneducated daily wagers working to support their families, and vectors easily disseminate the disease to their neighbors. In addition, they often become reinfected with VL or develop post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis several years later, which is another focus of disease dissemination. Medical follow-up is extremely difficult in these patients. However, with the recent involvement of stakeholders such as the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative, Médecins Sans Frontičres, and Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS), the number of patients is decreasing. But many people are still becoming infected and eradication remains a distant goal. So what more can be done? The contents of this book review the most recent progress of SATREPS and shares this collaborative research from the forefront of endemic sites in Bangladesh. There is a tide in the affairs of men. Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of disease control is bound in shallows and in miseries. ~modified from Shakespeare ~
