That portion of our being, which we inherit from divinity, has been, by the discipline of Science, developed in such magnificence of energy as clearly marks its origin; while the petty powers of our animal constitution have sunk to comparative nonentity. In the conflict of battle, and the agonizing shock of war, the achievements of corporeal prowess are behold no more; the mail-protected rank of heroes has dwindled into puny insignificance, before the vast machinery of destruction which Science has created and arrayed upon the martial field; she impels, with invisible and superhuman arm, the flame-winged missiles which annihilate legions, and crush the pride of castellated bulwarks with irresistible and ruinous prostration.
