Excerpt from Life and Art It matters little that we cannot positively identify the w.h. To whom Shakespeare dedicated his sonnets; it does matter tremendously that we have Hamlet and Lear. The Odyssey matters, but not Homer's birth place. And it does not matter if we shall never know just what Hardy thinks of Shaw or Wells, so long as we have The Dynasts. Hardy himself has realized this, and has let it go at that. The cleavage I am indicating here is too frequently forgotten. Its recognition Often distinguishes an artist of genius like Hardy from one of talent like George Moore; it more Often distinguishes a just critic from an unjust or impertinent one.
