This book examines the Rotterdam-based French Huguenot refugee Pierre Bayle, whose Dictionary (and other works) were much admired by philosophers and opponents of royal despotism. Condemning religious fanaticism and intolerance. Bayle was misunderstood by contemporaries and has puzzled modern scholars too. By analyzing his Dictionary articles on thirteen sixteenth-century reformers--Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, Anabaptist (or otherwise radical)--the author finds that Bayle's view of the Protestant Reformation was profoundly negative, not because he did not value the Reformed faith, but because he valued it so much.
