Als die Römer in den 90er Jahren des 1. Jhs. die Reichsgrenze vom Rhein an den Neckar verlegten, annektierten sie unbesiedeltes Gebiet. Im Gegensatz zu Rheinland und Schweiz wurde die gesamte Infrastruktur durch das römische Heer und einwandernde Zivilisten völlig neu aufgebaut, so daß eine genuin provinzialrömische Gesellschaft und Religion entstanden. Auf reicher archäologischer und epigraphischer Quellengrundlage wird nach Lage, Zeitstellung und Ausgestaltung der Kultstätten, militärischen und zivilen Dedikanten[gruppen] sowie Bedeutung, Häufigkeit und Verbreitung der verehrten Gottheiten gefragt, darunter Jupiter, Merkur, Mithras, Muttergottheiten, Diana, Viktoria, die Genien, Mars, Apollo, Herkules und vergöttlichte Kaiser. So entsteht eine "Momentaufnahme" des 2./3. Jhs. und ein Gesamtbild der religiösen Verehrung in der Region, das Vergleiche mit anderen Grenzregionen erlaubt. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet ein Katalog religiöser Zeugnisse an 78 Fundorten, darunter 20 Heiligtümer, 159 Reliefs, 98 Altäre / Altar und andere Inschriften, 70 Jupitergigantensäulen, 44 Statuen und 46 Statuetten mit 481 Darstellungen oder Nennungen 44 unterschiedlicher Gottheiten. When the Romans shifted the Imperial border from the Rhine to the Neckar River in the 90s of the 1st century they annexed an unoccupied area. In contrast to the Rhine Area and Switzerland the entire infrastructure was newly established by the Roman army and immigrant civilians so that a genuinely provincial-Roman society and religion emerged. On the basis of rich archaeological and epigraphic source material, the author asks for the location, dating, and organisation of cult sites, military and civilian [groups of] dedicants, as well as the significance, frequency, and distribution of worshipped deities, amongst them Jupiter, Mercury, Mithras, mother goddesses, Diana, Victory, the Genii, Mars, Apollo, Hercules, and deified emperors. Thus a "snapshot" of the 2nd/3rd century is created, and with it an overall picture of religious worship in the region which allows comparisons with other border zones. The starting point for all this is a catalogue of religious testimonies from 78 sites, amongst them 20 sanctuaries, 159 reliefs, 98 altars and other inscriptions, 70 Jupiter Columns, 44 statues, and 46 statuettes with 481 representations or mentions of 44 different gods and goddesses.
