Der systematisch angelegte Band erschließt - unterhalb der 'Hochkunst' - eine internationale Bildkultur, die bisher bei Fach- und Kunsthistorikern wenig Beachtung gefunden hat. Alle Beiträge richten ihr Augenmerk auf die besonders reiche ikonographische Produktion des 'Jahrhunderts der Revolutionen' (ca. 1770-1871). Von Portrait- und Modestichen über politische Allegorien und Karikaturen bis hin zu geographischen Karten und populären Bilderbögen werden praktisch alle druckgraphischen Bildgattungen dieser erweiterten 'Schwellenzeit' (Reinhart Koselleck) exemplarisch auf ihre eigenen Produktions- und Rezeptionsbedingungen, ihre Erinnerungspotentiale und ihre europäische Vernetzung untersucht. Zu einer im Entstehen begriffenen interdisziplinären Historischen Bildwissenschaft leistet der Band einen grundlegenden Beitrag. Le présent volume met en lumičre de maničre systématique et sur un plan international une culture de l'image couvrant 'le sičcle des révolutions' s'étendant de 1770 ŕ 1871. En privilégiant la gravure politique imprimée, les contributions ŕ l'ouvrage collectif se penchent sur un médium hybride, situé entre le 'grand art' et les arts populaires: une culture encore peu explorée par l'histoire de l'art. Du portrait ŕ l'allégorie en passant par la gravure de mode, les cartes de géographie, l'illustration ou la caricature, cet ouvrage propose un panorama des arts de la gravure ŕ l'époque du 'culte des images' (Baudelaire). Il expose leurs conditions de production et leurs modes de consommation, leur puissance d'évocation ainsi que les réseaux de leur diffusion européenne. Ce volume contribue ainsi de maničre significative au développement d'une science historique et interdisciplinaire de l'image. This volume of essays, international in scope, illuminates a vast graphic output situated culturally between 'high art' and 'popular imagery' that has as yet been little explored either by art historians or general historians. The essays focus in a systematic manner on the rich iconography of the 'Century of Revolution' (c.1770-1871) and range over political allegory, portraiture, fashion prints, maps, book illustration and caricature, presenting a panorama of the graphic arts in this age of the 'culte des images' (Baudelaire). The volume investigates the conditions of their production, the manner of their consumption, their evocative power and their diffusion across Europe. In this way it makes a groundbreaking contribution to the development of historical and interdisciplinary study of the image.
