Should we all be in favour of science? After all, without science, we would not have such vital services as electricity. But, even so, can we really believe everything that scientists tell us? A good way to approach science is to start near the beginning and look first at figures like Galileo and Newton. Yet some people tend to be rather afraid of science. They may disapprove of activities like animal experiments or worry about the dangers of atomic energy. Has the scientific approach depended too much on taking measurements, while leaving out all human concerns? Also is there really any conflict between science and religion? Professor Lord Martin Rees, O.M., Astronomer Royal and former President of the Royal Society, writes: "I greatly enjoyed your book, which certainly deserves a wide readership."
