Der Band enthält 37 Beiträge des 7. Symposiums der Internationalen Studiengruppe Musikarchäologie im Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Tianjin, China, vom 20.-25. September 2010, ergänzt um einen Nachruf auf Werner Bachmann [1923-2011], ein Vorwort der Herausgeber, ein Inhaltsverzeichnis der CD und ein Autorenregister. Die Beiträge gliedern sich in Musikinstrumente und Organologie [unterteilt in die Aspekte Allgemeines, Idiophone, Blasinstrumente und Saiteninstrumente], Musiktheorie, Musik im Kontext und Berichte. Naturgemäß liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf der Musikarchäologie und Musikgeschichte Chinas, wo z.B. präzise Methoden zur Bestimmung von Tönen und Intervallen besonders früh nachweisbar sind. Weitere Themen stammen aus dem Alten Ägypten, dem barocken England, der Bronzezeit Schwedens und der Iberischen Halbinsel, dem antiken Griechenland, dem römischen Pompeji und seinem Umfeld, verschiedensten Gebieten Südamerikas, dem niederländischen und polnischen Mittelalter, dem vorgeschichtlichen Südafrika, Japan um die Zeitenwende, der späten Eisenzeit Finnlands und dem Jüngeren Paläolithikum. Vertreten sind z.B. Harfe, Flöten, Glocken, Sackpfeifen oder Lyra. The volume contains 37 contributions of the 7th symposium of the International Study Group on Music Archaeology at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Tianjin, China, 20-25 September, 2010, supplemented by an obituary for Werner Bachmann [1923-2011], a foreword by the editors, a table of contents of the CD, and a list of authors. The papers are classified by musical instruments and organology [separated into the aspects of general topics, idiophones, wind instruments, and stringed instruments], musical theory, music in context, and reports. Naturally, one focus is on the music archaeology and history of China, where e.g. precise methods for measuring tones and intervals are attested at a particularly early date. Other topics come from Ancient Egypt, Baroque England, the Bronze Age in Sweden and on the Iberian Peninsula, antique Greece, the Roman town of Pompeii and its surroundings, different areas of South America, the Dutch and Polish Middle Ages, prehistoric South Africa, Japan around the birth of Christ, the Late Iron Age in Finnland, and the Upper Palaeolithic. Represented instruments are e.g. harp, flutes, bells, bagpipes or lyre.
