Whether this title is an appropriate one or not may be an open question, but there is no doubt that he was the most prominent dramatist of France during the eighteenth century and one of the most finished and influential writers in the entire range of literature. This edition of one of his most successful dramas, by many considered his best, Zaire, and of a number of his epistles and letters, herewith for the first time presented to the public of teachers and students, may therefore be reasonably expected to fill a lack in our courses of French. The tragedy of Zaire was written in conscious imitation of Shakespeare's Othello, and while this circumstance may not add anything to the value of the piece, it is sufficiently interesting to justify the study of the work in all such schools and colleges as look upon a comparative study of literature as a valuable and necessary branch of higher education.
