William Kentridge explore ici l’imaginaire de l’Égypte ancienne vue par les voyageurs des siècles passés en réunissant une série de dessins ainsi que des captures d’écran de ses films d’animation.Ses dessins, réalisés à même des livres ou des collages de feuilles de papier trouvées, confrontent sa géographie intérieure avec les importantes collections de vestiges conservées au Louvre : le scribe, le sphinx, le chat ou encore le mausolée trouvent ainsi écho dans les dessins d’artistes et de voyageurs – ruines, pyramides, explorateurs, transformations du chat en lion – réalisés par Carracci ou Degas en passant par Le Brun et Crapelet. L’ouvrage est complété par le texte Isis Tragédie, inspiré de l’Isis de Lully, ainsi que par une série de notes inédites dans lesquelles William Kentridge revient sur les figures égyptiennes qui l’ont nourri et sur ses supports de travail. Le livre contient également trois nouveaux films de l’artiste en DVD.L’installation Carnets d’Égypte a été présentée en 2011 dans les salles du département des Arts graphiques et des Antiquités égyptiennes du Louvre.Exploring the imaginarium of Ancient Egypt as seen by century old travelers, William Kentridge gathers a series of drawings and screenshots from his animation films. His drawings, made on sheets of paper found here and there or directly on books, confront his internal geography to the important collections of relics stored in the Louvre: the Scribe, the Sphinx, the Scribble Cat or even the Mausoleum echoes in drawings of artists and travelers – ruins, pyramides, explorators, transformation of lion-cat made by Carraci, Degas, Le Brun or Crapelet.The book is completed by the text Isis Tragedie, inspired by the Isis of Lully, along with unpublished notes by Kentridge, in which he writes about the Egyptian figures who nurtured him and his work. A DVD containing three movies by the artist also comes with the book.The installation Carnets d’Égypte was presented in 2011 at the Louvre in the department of Graphic Art and Egypt Antiques.
