Women throughout the world have been latecomers to the education system and, even when admitted, have been deprived of equality with men. The reasons for this have been investigated with increasing vigour over the past forty years in both the developed and developing world. The founders of the newly independent state of Papua New Guinea in 1975 assured women of their right to equality but achieving this goal has not proved as easy as declaring it. In this book, published 13 years after independence, the position of women in education, their needs, their aspirations, and suggestions for action are examined by academics, professionals and grass roots workers engaged in the educational process. Though largely devoted to Papua New Guinea it also draws on the experience of women in other countries of the South Pacific so that the discussion of problems and solutions may be shared. The book will be an invaluable source of data, of ideas, of recommendations for action to students, to practitioners, to activists and policy makers, to all who wish to learn more about the concept of equality of educational opportunity for women.
